The Sharon Disney Lund School of Dance Welcomes Award-Winning Choreographer and Teacher, John Jasperse who is appearing at REDCAT with his company performing TRUTH, REVISED HISTORIES, WISHFUL THINKING, AND FLAT-OUT LIES, April 14-18, 2010.
John Jasperse teaches a master class to students of the Sharon Disney Lund School of Dance at CalArts on Friday, April 16 from 10 a.m.- 12 p.m. He comes to CalArts during his engagement at REDCAT April 14-18.
Jasperse is a world-renowned, award-winning choreographer and artistic director of John Jasperse Company. His work has been presented by festivals and presenting organizations in the United States, Brazil, Chile, Israel, Japan, and throughout Europe.
Jasperse's master class will begin with an anatomy focused warm-up, drawn from both traditional and recent techniques, aiming to align and re pattern the energy flow in the body in order to find support from the floor and our connection into space. He will begin with simple movements, improvisation scores, exercises and sequences gradually building in complexity. He will work with CalArts students on movement material, some from Jasperse's work and some created from these explorations. Jasperse’s goal is to integrate energetic patterning explored in the first portion of class and to play with different manners of experiencing and embodying the choreographic material.
Jasperse's most recent work, Truth, Revised Histories, Wishful Thinking, and Flat Out Lies, is a new work for five performers with a commissioned score by composer Hahn Rowe, performed live by a string quartet from the International Contemporary Ensemble. Scenic and visual design is by John Jasperse, with lighting design by Jasperse in collaboration with Joe Levasseur. Truth will be at REDCAT from April 14-18.
John Jasperse graduated from Sarah Lawrence College in 1985, and then moved to New York City to live and work. He is Artistic Director/Choreographer of John Jasperse Company. In 1996, Jasperse created Thin Man Dance, Inc., a New York-based not-for-profit organization; this structure supports the work of John Jasperse Company. His work has been presented by festivals and presenting organizations in the United States, Brazil, Chile, Israel, Japan, and throughout Europe.
Since 1991, he has regularly taught workshops and classes in the U.S., Europe, Mexico, and Brazil. As a dancer/performer, he began his career working with Lisa Kraus and Dancers (1985-1987), creating original roles in four works, and performing in the US and Europe. In 1988 and 1989, he worked in Belgium with Anne Teresa de Keersmaeker's Rosas, performing in Ottone, Ottone in major festivals and venues through Europe. From 1987 to 1993, he worked with Jennifer Monson, both performing in her work and collaborating on improvisation projects.
